words oot ma mouth colin.
no one gets cash in hand, you have to have a bank account these days.
and where are all these council houses? there is a dearth of local authority housing in glasgow and they certainly are not handed out as rewards for staying clean for 6 weeks.
however, i am glad to see most peope on this board have a more enlightened view than mr kubrick. my blood pressure was up there for a bit.

"Should also bear in mind that a large proportion of people sleeping rough and begging in the U.K are not adults, they are children who are out on the streets for a variety of reasons, and are not eligible to claim benefit."

Good point mozza, also if they are running away from an abusive home, they dont want to be in a system that would let the abuser track them down again.

i'd imagine there's a few people on here who disagree even more vehemently with Mr Kubrick's opinion than even you and Moz, but who weren't able to perhaps keep their pressure down enough to express said feelings

once again, a calm voice of reason, Cara Smile

ha! it is only cause you can't see me that i appear a calm voice of reason!
it is one of my many problems that i find it hard to keep a cool head when discussing something i am passionate about, i guess having to channel thoughts through a keyboard must help.. or maybe my meditations on channeling tony benn are working Smile

thanks for your kind words though.

Hmm are you sure about that? As far as I understand no state benefits are paid in cash anymore. As for the assertion that nobody in the U.K should be begging because we have a welfare state? Do you think people enjoy doing it?

sorry i should have mibbe been more precise, its called nfa - no fixed abode, and obviously you cant get a bank account without a house, so your given a giro you cash at the post office. I'm not making any assumptions about if people enjoy begging, im just saying there is help there we all pay for already throught the tax system.

They fall outwith the welfare state. These are often the most vulnerable group and end up getting drawn into prositution and drugs. Its really quite awful.

you perhaps have a diffrent experience in this to me, but most of the beggars i pass are adults. i have no idea though if theres any help for kids out there, and its obviously not a good life. as i said at the start i personaly have no issue with begging, i was just stating facts.

Aye i know. I have no beef with you, but the benefits system is a lot more complicated and in my experiance its actually designed to be so bureaucratic that people are actually put off claiming in the first place.

There is no need to beg in today's society. The welfare system provides adequate, if limited support. I could accept it as a sad inevtability if we were living in the a third world state. Unfortunately, in this country begging is a nuisance and is uneccesary.

I sometimes walk about Glasgow and I feel like im in a Charles Dicken's novel. The number of people who seem to be 50p short of a busfare is staggering.

stanners seems to be mixing up people who are begging and people who are wantin 50p for a bus. I'm not bothered about people begging for food or even smack or cheap ice dragon cider but people being intimidating and trying to extort 'bus money' out of you is not on, you should be allowed to pepper spray them. Some times i feel like i'm back at school when i walk through st enoch square.
