Hi,
I argued with myself whether to post this here as it is very much a NIMBY kind of thing but I know there are a few here that live in the general area.
I am looking for support in our campaign to stop a proposed development in the back lane and embankment behind our house.
This is the third or fourth attempt over the years and the usual tactics are employed, a small scale development is submitted then, wallop, before you know it there's a ginormous building stealing daylight and causing transport havoc. The application is always made around a holiday time to keep the objections to a minimum, they're a sneaky bunch indeed and this could be just an exercise to increase the value of the land but we can't afford to be complacent, too many ugly buildings are springing up all over the city with little thought to the effect they have on those around them.
The area in question supports much wildlife, besides the weans that abscond from Hyndland School there are many burds, bugs, rodents and ffffoxes not to mention the plants and trees.
The surrounding streets are choked with motors as it is but the biggest worry is the effect on our building which is supported by girders and prone to being a bit, eh, mobile!
Below is a link to an online petition, there are entries from as far afield as Hong Kong and Moodiesburn so it doesn't really matter where you live just that you consider the proposal.
Signing the petition would be great but sending a letter carries much more weight, there are sample letters available to download and much more information if you follow the link to the residents association website.
Closing date for objections is the 24th of April, thanks in advance to all that can be arsed.
Alan

Glasgow looks pretty tired and dated at the moment full stop. Sadly. |

Whatever. That wasn't meant to be a nasty attack or anything. Is it unfair to state that a city that you love isn't looking its best? Glasgow has always been an ugly duckling aesthetically. It's no Florence is it? That's never bothered me because that's not what it's about (although it has always made me a bit sad when the West End crowd try to make out it's something it's not on those terms i.e in Lanark when Gray has Thaw state that it's a grand city if you look at it with new eyes, it just needs artists to use it. No Duncan, the reason it hasn't been imagined like Paris, New York, London, Florence, Venice etc is because it looks like a dung pile in comparison). Anyway, what I was actually saying was that the city is looking a bit grim recently by its own standards. |

It seems like a bit of an arbitrary statement. What recent viewing of the city has led you to arrive at this conclusion? |

How odd. I was just thinking the other day that Glasgow's starting to look like a pretty nice, modern city. A lot of the redevelopment in the financial district/Anderston area are quite nice (as office buildings go). They might be a wee bit faceless but give me a big glass building over a big 60s concrete job anyday. |

yeah this is the kind of natural way of cities, not only glasgow. it's only the very rare city in scandanavia or other wealthy liberal countires where things tens to look pretty good.
"It's no Florence is it?"
is a pretty idiotic statement. i lived there for a while - venture outside the piazzas and florence, on the whole, looks like it's on the edge of collapse. it's a total state and it fucking stinks. |
