I'm actually interested in the split here; I reckon The Smiths are a great band to listen to on sunny days. The music's happy jangly meoldies and the lyrics, for the most part, obviously I'm counting 'I Know It's Over' here, are witty and make me smile constantly.

The smiths are catchy and fun, ideal for a summers day. but then i was never going to say anything else was i.

I went to see Morrissey in manchester a couple of years ago. I bought a book (Morrisseys Manchester) that detailed significant places related to the smiths or mentioned in smiths songs. I packed up and went to manchester, it was a glorious weekend as i wandered around manchester with the smiths in my ears taking in the iron bridge, cemetry gates, holy name church etcetera etcetera

I never really got into the Smiths. I tried my best. Bought the greatest hits etc. Vauxhall and I is not a bad album. I like The Boxers EP. But its another artist that seems to be highly regarded but I cant see the attraction to. I'm also convinced that this new ressurgence in Morrisey's popularity is a bit of an NME led campaign.

I've never understood how people could not like The Smiths, or label them as 'depressing' unless they hadn't really listened to the music.

Well I recon the Smiths must be some kind of acquired taste then.

I find it more amazing that some people dont like The Beatles in at least some capacity. That I really do find hard to comprehend.

I can't stand The Beatles. Musically or personally. Can't explain why.

They do nothing for me whatsoever.

I enjoyed the Frog Chorus more than anything they've ever done.*

I think if you listened to some of the later albums youd like them.

The Smiths are better than a lot of stuff, but really don't rate as anything monumental in my opinion. I think the cult of Morrissey has got them far more attention than they ever deserved.

I find them entertaining, and his voice is really samey and grating.. their music has a very specific unique sound that I don't think anyone else ever really captured. Unique is good. So, aye, they're alright. I don't think of them as a "summer band" though.

Aye...boys and their "poles/polls". We all know about that.

Sometimes great (well, 'How Soon Is Now?', 'This Charming Man' and 'There's A Light) but mostly depressing...

"Last Night I Dreamt...." is phenomenal. I'm not a Smiths fan as such, but I can't deny the beauty of that song.
