As usual, spent way too much on music this year, especially on pp oldies and rarities, but here's my picks of '08.

Albums
Joakim Skogsberg – Jola Rota, Hayvanlar Alemi - Tatilde, Toumani Diabate - Mande Variations, Juaneco Y Su Combo - Masters of Chicha, Threshold Houseboys Amulet Set, Coh Plays Cosey, Why Are We Building Such a Big Ship? - No Blood No Blooms, Bonnie Prince Billy - Lie Down In The Light, Fire On Fire - The Orchard, Therese - s/t, Big Blood & The Bleedin' Hearts, Brothers Unconnected tour cd.

Compilations
Victrola Favorites, The Time Was Then Is Now, Give Me Love: Songs of the Brokenhearted, Sprigs of Time, Recovery 7" Box.

Gigs
Brothers Unconnected, Buttholes, Marissa Nadler, Slim Twig.

Films
Let The Right One In, Mr.Lonely, Encounters at the End of the World, Man on Wire

Moment/Achievment/Experience
Nothing comes to mind, maybe Santorini sunset with partner, or not getting suspended from phd

*Stir - was that John Bender record rereleased this year, missed that?

Ah, sonofpazuzu. Now I have lots more to add to the required listening pile!

Ach, I wasn't going to bother but now I'm at a loose end [waiting for a plumber for the 3rd time in 2 weeks, the perfect end to a perfect year]...........:

So, off the top of my head:

Albums of the Year : Uh......new music? Lord know's!
Let's go with new[ish] & new to me:
Arthur Russell-Love Is Overtaking Me
MV & EE-Ragas Of The Culvert
Sun Araw - Beach Head
Dennis Wilson-Pacific Ocean Blue

Tunes of the Year [none of these are new]:
Frank & Roby-Level With Me
RAH Band-Electric Fling [Undoubtedly my most asked about record of the year]
Västkustska Ryggdunkarsällskapet EPs 1 & 2
Sarr Band-Double Action [thankyou Valhalla in Kilmarnock for this 20p gem!]

Mix/Compilation of the Year [passed many an hour at work]:
Italians Do It Better-After Dark
& all the Soundway Nigeria Special comps

Gig of the Year :
Playing with Silver Apples [because I couldn't actually believe it].

Fiim of the Year : Wild Combination

Moment, Experience, Achievement of the Year:
Gigs with everyone from James Murphy to the aforementioned Silver Apples.
Something I thought I'd never manage.

I made it through 2008. But 2009 had better be a fucking improvement.

it is a belter!

& I would like to point out that I told everyone about it AGES ago.

I only bought it because of the 'gold knickers round ankles' disco bag, but what a find! Best 20p I've ever spent I think. In fact, thats probably my moment of the year! Although, now that I think about it all I realise that it was actually last year.

Ah well

the 'bag' [sleeve] is a classic picture of legs from calves to toe with a pair of gold knickers around the ankles. See it in all its glory [at around 36 seconds in]here:

no. it was just that i managed to get a copy this year and it was new to me.

i didn't know about the threshold houseboys amulet set - thanks for the tip!

i would kill to hear that brothers unconnected cd.

various artists comps that did it for me were pretty much everything on soundway, subliminal frequencies and mississippi.

this thread also reminded me how much i loved man on wire and wild combination.

not bought as much music as i normally do this year due to being a bit skint but, off the top of my head, i liked these:

tunes: ***desmond and the tutus - kiss you on the cheek (king of town remix)***, new order - your silent face (burglar tom edit), fern kinney - together we are beautiful, front 242 - controversy between, bumblebee unlimited - ladybug, the parsonage choir - love will tear us apart, dorothy's fortress - silencer.

albums: can't think of anything that really impressed just now, will update this bit if i do!

comp: the compass point story (1980-86), diplo - top ranking, optimo - sleepwalk (especially title track!), james murphy/pat mahoney at fabric (think this was a late 2007 release actually...)

films: somer's town, dark knight, no country for old men.

moment, achievement, experience: promoted some of my own nights and also deejayed at some great clubs this year thanks to a couple of guys from on here.

Did anyone pick up the Zang Tuum Tumb boxset? Am curious as to whether the DVD is just videos or if there's a documentary about ZTT on it, too?

I know the answer. It's amazing what you can find on the internet these days.

Where? All I've been able to find is a listing for the CDs/DVDs, but no synopsis of the content. If there was a documentary, I didn't think it'd be listed as many aren't other than within the synopsis

'Goodbye Horses' by Q Lazzarus - even though it was made years and years ago I never really listened to it until this year. Absolutely amazing.

Same, man! Haha!

The tune's incredible, not least because of the flippin great lyrics. I think its appearance in GTA 4 gave it a bit of a 2008 revival. An old pal who'd been playing it sent me a Youtube of it. That was back in May or something. It's been pretty much on loop ever since Wink

The tune: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=KxCCYBKXn44

The "Mangina" fae Silence Of The Lambs: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=x81F28kPXuo

The Clerks 2 homage: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=79Jt4Q5ulEs Laughing

Aye... fuckin' OBSESSED wi' that tune this year.

Album of the year for me was 'Where You Go I Go Too' by Lindstrom. Absolutely astronomical prog disco epicness with synths that split the sky. Check the middle section of 'The Long Way Home.' It's the sound of Leon Ware throwing a jam for Ming The Merciless.

Oh, I also rinsed Sebastien Tellier's album a dillion. I think 'Sexual Sportswear' from it has been my favourite 2008 track.

Cannae get the full shnit on Youtube, unfortunately. I flipping love the track, though. Guy-Man Homem De Cristo's garlicy robotic nads are imprinted all over it Cool
