A colleague of mine has just came in to work to check his shifts. He has brought (to my floor's amazement) his mail order bride in with him to show her off. "Strange" is unquestionably the best way to describe this situation...

NB: Shallow M:R says that she's not even hot!

Especially bizarre for a workplace which apparently kicks so much ass.

I'm sure some would see mail order brides in your workplace as making your work kick even more ass. The whole mail order bride thing just completely screws with my head. I still can't comprehend it...

Paying for a wife does seem a bit odd doesn't it?

I mean, if you went out and paid some bint here to come and live with you I reckon there'd be questions asked but, nip over to Asia and it's all OK apparently.

The last guy I had to fire had a mail-order bride. He was the most socially disfunctional man I have ever had the dis-pleasure to work with.

Thailand. He went over there to marry her. He also (and this is completely factual) went through an online catalogue to find her. He told everyone in work that they'd been speaking on MSN for six years, and it was an internet romance... until he left his PC open at the catalogue page, and unfortunately one of his colleagues found out the truth!

Who thinks it's ok?

Maybe I'm wide of the mark but is there not a lot of relationships that do not involve mail order that are rather 'convenient' and have little to do with love?

Is it not also the case that romantic love could blossom between two people who's relationship starts off through some creepy man fingering the latest edition of 'Thai Brides'?

Just playing devil's advocate.......

Actually, I hadn't really thought that one through.

There is obviously quite a profound power imbalance in a Mail Order relationship with the Thai Bride presumably speaking little English on arrival in the country and having little means to make herself financially/independently secure of said creepy man. Vulnerable stuff.

Fair point well made

I have no idea why anyone would want to have a mail order bride or why anyone would want to be one. Both sides sound like freaks to me, but if they decide to do that, that's their business. and it's business, in the most literal sense.

It sounds vaguely like being a prostitute or being an indentured servant. Presumably one with a bit of suss can better themselves and leave the relationship in time if that's what they want. And if that is their choice, it's really down to them.

I frankly think it makes the guy look more like a fool than the woman. The woman is using whatever means necessary to get out of a situation (living in Thailland or whatever) that they do not want. The guy is the sad fuck to think that by buying someone, he will have a companion. However, if I'm not mistaken, in some Asian countries and circles, having a rich, western husband is also seen as status.

It's a funny ol' world...

no, but I did get a lift from a taxi driver that was a sex tourist about 2 weeks ago. I had to endure 90 minutes in the early hours of the morning of sordid and frankly unnecessary revelations from a complete stranger - not a great journey I must admit. Strange thing was that his persona was in no way lecherous and he didn't consider this 'hobby' to be a big deal.

He did insist that he'd never marry one of his thai poppets though. As it is, he said, they will worship you night and day in thailand, the way its meant to be. Get them over here and they become westernised - lazy, overweight, selfish etc.

Ultimately I couldn't help but feel pity for such a lonely and otherwise personable man but his banter still made me feel nauseous
